What a Japanese Head Spa Actually Is (And Why It Works So Well on Holiday)

A Japanese head spa is a scalp treatment, not a haircut and not a hair wash. Here is what happens in the hour, who it suits, and why a Red Sea holiday is the best week of the year to try one.

What a Japanese Head Spa Actually Is (And Why It Works So Well on Holiday)

The short answer

A Japanese head spa is a treatment for your scalp, done lying down, with warm water and a slow massage rather than with scissors or colour. In our studio it runs 60 minutes and starts from EUR 25.

The sequence is always the same: the scalp is read and cleansed, then rinsed under a warm-water flow while your head rests in a basin, then massaged along the pressure points from the hairline to the base of the skull, then treated with a mask suited to what the scalp needs, then dried. You leave with clean, light hair and, in most cases, a noticeably quieter head.

It is not a haircut, not a blow-dry service, and not a hair spa in the sense of a conditioning treatment for the ends. The whole point is the skin under the hair.

What actually happens in the hour

The first few minutes are diagnosis. We look at whether the scalp is dry, oily, flaking, tight or sun-reddened, because everything after that is chosen from what we find. A scalp that has had four days of sunscreen, salt and chlorine on it needs a different cleanse from one that is simply dry.

Then the water. You lie back, your head is supported, and warm water runs over the scalp in a slow stream while the therapist works through it section by section. This is the part guests remember: it is the closest thing to being able to switch your own head off.

The massage follows the same map every time - temples, the band above the ears, the ridge at the back of the skull, then the crown - and it is slow on purpose. Fast pressure on a scalp wakes it up; slow pressure settles it. Finally the mask goes on for the last stretch, and the hair is dried and left loose.

Nothing about it is invasive, nothing is cut, and nothing changes your colour.

Who it suits, and who should book something else

Book a head spa if your head feels tight or noisy, if you sleep badly, if you carry tension in your jaw and temples, if your scalp is dry or itchy after days in the sea, or if you have been staring at screens on a working holiday.

Book something else if the problem is your hair rather than your scalp. Frizz that no product controls is a keratin question, not a head-spa question. Sun-bleached, snapping ends are a cut-and-treatment question. Dry hair you want to look good for one evening is a styling question.

If you are not sure which of the two you have, the test is where the discomfort sits. Scalp - book the head spa. Length and ends - tell us at booking and we will point you at the right treatment instead.

The three versions we run

The classic Japanese head spa is 60 minutes from EUR 25: diagnosis, warm-water cleanse, scalp massage, mask, dry. This is the one to start with.

The luxury head spa with hot stone is 75 minutes from EUR 40. The addition is warm stones worked across the shoulders and the base of the neck alongside the scalp work, which matters more than it sounds - most scalp tension is actually shoulder tension that has travelled upwards.

The head spa and facial combination is 60 minutes from EUR 30, and is the practical choice if you have exactly one free afternoon: scalp treatment and a cleansing facial in one appointment rather than two.

All three run in our own studio on the 2nd floor of Panorama Mall, with the same therapists and the same equipment.

Why a Red Sea holiday is the right week for it

Salt water, chlorine, sun and daily sunscreen are four things a scalp does not enjoy, and a holiday delivers all of them at once. By day four most guests have a scalp that is drier and tighter than it is at home, whether or not they have noticed.

The second reason is simpler: you have the time. A head spa is an hour where you cannot do anything else, which is a cost at home and a feature here.

The practical advice is to book it after two or three beach days rather than on arrival day, and to prefer late afternoon or evening. Going straight from a scalp treatment into strong midday sun undoes part of the benefit.
